Many big streams, like the Mississippi and Nile Rivers, have been around for hundreds of thousands of years. Thousands of floods have happened. People once welcomed these floods, because they added nutrient rich sediment to their fields. Today rivers are controlled and contained so flooding is less likely to occur.
